Bend Tests
Test methods and results
   

All C-T Sailbattens are tested before dispatch to ensure consistancy and quality. Each batten contains a laminated barcode so that individual battens can be identified and bend characteristics replicated or modified.

Battens are tested using a 3-point bend test. Results of the 3-point test can also be used to obtain an average EI value for the entire batten.

 
 3-point bend test
Battens are supported at each end and deflection is measured at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 points (see diagram below). Deflection values are recorded for:
- self weight (amount of batten sag under its own weight)
- with 6.8 (15lb) weight suspended from the 1/2 point.


3-point bend tests can be conducted on an existing set of battens, giving C-Tech staff target numbers to work from when designing a new set of battens. Click here for more detail on conducting 3-point bend tests.

 EI Values
An EI value (modulus of elasticity, also known as Young's Modulus) is often used to describe the stiffness of a beam.

A 3-point bend test gives an average EI value (in nM2) over the entire span. This is calculated using the following formula:


weight*9.806*testLength^3

weighted defl. - self weight
(measured at 1/2 point)

Actual EI values can be measured for the luff and leech of a batten using the test method shown at right.
 

 Requesting specific batten stiffness
C-Tech can design a set of battens to suit the requirements of your sail and sailing needs (eg. offshore racing vs inshore cruising).

Sets of battens can also be custom-built with laminates changed to meet specific stiffness and draft requirements. Stiffness requirements can be represented using target EI values or as a % difference from an existing C-T sailbatten.
